A day spent taking passengers for the ride of their life! 5-6 cars at a time around this new layout at The Bend Motorsport Park Stadium Circuit. Patchy weather at the start of the day made it a little hard to get a feel for the speed we needed to attack the first wall ride (I may have tapped it earlier in the day), but we got the hang of it pretty quickly. I've loaded the screen with data so there's something interesting to look at! 2nd lap of the day which was also my fastest lap. This is my first grip lap in the Sleeka Spares S15 at Mallala Motorsport Park. I've been drifting at this track for over 10 years and never got around to giving this a go! I'm using some 2-year-old Nankang AR-1 tyres (255/265) on wastegate pressure (around 14psi). I still have a lot to learn but it's good to have a starting point.

One of the ugliest laps you will ever see! But also my fastest for the day. This was the driest session I had, ducking and weaving between wet patches looking for the dry line. The Nankang AR1s did an amazing job, considering they were half worn and last used over a year ago, AND with my drift wheel alignment! (Lot's of camber and toe out in the front, positive camber in the rear.) It was alway...

I chucked on some 265 Achilles 123s semi-slick tyres on because the track was wet. I didn't think it'd grip up much but there were a few spots that really did. The S15's rear end should really be able to handle more abuse than this, but I guess it's good that it happened during a practice day!

Mate this is a huge help, cheers. How 150km/h entries is 'not that quick' is beyond me haha
One of the few straight to the point practical videos out there about what traction arm length does to rear geometry, thanks man!
Nice video mate! Thanks this helped me, I’m also in Radelaide! Quick question - do you know why my pclink logger file only imports as a 1sec empty file on race render? I followed your guidance, It’s proper pc log file, exported saved as a csv which has data in it. But it comes in as an empty file for some reason? 🙏🤟
Sorry, I didn't see your question. I'm not sure why it would not have any data, I've never had that before. Does it happen to you every time?
So I have a g4+v10 stand alone tuned but I have 0 throttle response. All the sensors are fine, and my drive by wire throttle body is also fine. does that mean my ecu needs to be retuned ? What would cause this thanks to anyone that could help. Car has been parked for a year now :(
Have you connected the ECU to the Link software and checked for any errors? No throttle response at all would usually suggest the DBW is going into limp mode because of an error. You should also visit the Link Support Forum and ask the question there. The support team is awesome.
Sold me on the G4X for an MX5, had no idea all the safety features that it had!
Hey, I saw you're still using Astra power steering pump, are you happy with it? And can you write wiring schema?
Yep! Astra pump working well. It’s important to make sure your wheel alignment is good because it doesn’t love heavy steering bind, or massive amounts of load. Wiring: big red (battery 12v), big brown (chassis ground), black (ignition 12v), blue/white (switched 12v). Hope that makes sense. The black wire needs to get power before the blue/white, otherwise it’ll ramp up slowly.
hei i see ur aim dash in the video. Can the ECU log the sensor data wiring to the dash ?since the dash hasn't log function.
I’m not sure. You should be able to send the dash data via CAN to the ecu. If you have a Link ECU you can ask for advice on the Link forum.
hei i'm using RaceRenders too.. it's fantastic software. i've question, is it worth to updgrade full version (licensed)
I’ve liked having the full version, I’ve tried to use all of the features. But it depends if you really need more than the basic stuff.
@@DeanNewcombDrift basic stuff only for 10mn, i can't used race renders for touring car or road racing wich is almost 30mn full lap
The guys in the UK are working on a pump controller for the Volvo pump which is canbus , you'll have a dial on the dash that can ramp up the speed for high response ,or set to work from revs . Neat bit of gear $120
Sounds interesting, I’ll keep my eye out for it!
Damn dude looks like it is singing! Can’t wait to come up for a scream again :)
First...
Great video! Similar case on my Time Attack S15: loosing oil pressure under cornering and braking, it drops from above 500 kpa to below 300. Want to fix this with an accumulator. How much air precharge do you use?
It's been a while since I did the precharge, but I think it was maybe 10psi?
How much $$$$
Double-check the current prices on DriftingSA.com.au closer to the next event, but it's usually $120 for 3 laps.
Great driving
Super helpful. Thank you. Great video!
Would it make sense to plumbing directly to the rear turbo oil feed provision on the exhaust side of the engine?
I think the idea is to pump oil directly into the block so that the rotating assembly is lubricated as soon as possible. Going via another location first would delay that.
Awesome 😍🔥🔥
Nice steering mate Looks like a full of lap I should be out at the bend for jdm speed event on 2nd may while you guys are drifting so hopefully be able jump over and have a look
Cheers! Yeah, I’ll be out there doing rides at the drift track
Looks like a handful! Super fast in a straight line!!! 👌🏻
It definitely needs a bit of work done for the cornering side of things. Haha
Just commenting to tell that I bought a G4X and your video made me fiddle with GP limits for oil pressure, temp and fuel pressure That will save my engine one day probably :)
Excellent! If you have an Ethrottle you can add extra safeties. I have the throttle closing near the top of the RPM to reduce the load/boost when I'm on limiter.
wow, handbrake flopping on steering - thats just bad as fuuuk it would drive me crazy!
Haha, yep it drove me crazy. I had some bruises after that event and I've changed to a different handbrake now. That one had plastic bushes and if I tightened it too much it'd bind up. New one is a ball bearing design so it's completely solid now.
tough!!
Nice work mate!
Cheers. Not a super clean lap but I made it all the way around. haha
@@DeanNewcombDrift thats all that matters bro :)
Great video!!
nice one dean!!! love the incar 360 footage. would be awesome to see more outside 360 footage too at some stage, looks killer
I did take a couple with the camera on the roof. Will see how it turned out!
Some good driving there mate, s15 looks beautiful as well you've done a great job.
xTengu Thanks! I’m really glad it stayed in one piece too. Haha
@@DeanNewcombDrift Haha, yea after a full weekend of drift too, what more could you ask for.
God
Nice explanation. Any ideas on how fast the accumulator recovers? and in your application what size accumulator are you using? Cheers
Thanks! It should recover instantly when the pressure is above the table threshold, but I haven’t tested that. The valve isn’t restrictive so the oil should flow back pretty quickly, especially under 50+ psi. Pretty sure mine is 3 quarts. A small part of the volume is taken up by compressed air though.
Cheers . I did notice the Strada dash as well. Are you happy with it ? I presume your running PDM and CAN buttons ?
The AIM dash is awesome. It displays and warns me about everything I need. No PDM. Just a relay and fuse panel I made and LED switches. scontent.fadl5-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/104756700_299986051366602_8249049379090579106_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=PADmsaqKclgAX98Mj7n&_nc_ht=scontent.fadl5-1.fna&oh=03f0c6aaccc3c829b1637d71aaca864c&oe=5FA23435

Thanks for all the information ...you are awesome n perfect driver good luck bro..😊
Tahir Sinal. Haha, Thank you!
Great video! I also have the the link mxs dash, how did you get it to pop up on the screen saying you’ve activated launch control / high boost ecu? I can also display warnings from the ecu can, can display and ecu digital input functions like that?
Hey. I use a custom CAN stream. The dash is just being told whether the digital input switch is on or off. I think there’s a topic in the Link forum about the custom stream. I’ll find it for you.
@Carl Fidler forums.linkecu.com/topic/10387-custom-can-stream-for-mxs-12-strada-link-product-with-g4-vr4/
@@DeanNewcombDrift Perfect! Thank you so much! sorry about the late reply, UA-cam never notified me you replied!
If you have it only open if oil pressure is low compared to rpm, how does it get recharged? I would think a toggle switch so you can prelube the engine just before cranking but close it during cranking, then have it automatically fill/release itself during driving would be the most effective setup. The pressure/rpm discrepancy table doesn’t account for what actual pressure is in the accumulator surely, so it might open the valve when there is 15psi pressure in the accusump and 30psi in the engine and cause even lower pressure in the engine. Having it open continuously during warm operation would mean the pressure in the sump would be the same as the engine so if the engine suddenly drops pressure it has a supply of oil at an appropriate pressure in reserve, unless I am missing something
Hey, thanks for the comment! 1. When the solenoid is closed it acts as a one-way valve, allowing the accumulator to recharge. That 's how the system gets primed when you first install it. 2. The accumulator can be set up to deliver oil as soon as you press the start switch. Mine pumps oil as it starts cranking, then stops once the oil pump is making its own pressure. The ECU then controls when it needs to supply extra pressure. 3. The accumulator is set up to hold more than 70psi all of the time, even now while the car is sitting stationary. If the engine pressure drops and the accumulator can't help to get it up to an acceptable level, the engine will shut down instantly. The oil pressure safety table is separate from the accumulator one. 4. Leaving it open continuously would just increase the oil capacity. If the engine pressure were to drop, the accumulator wouldn't provide more pressure, it'd just get lower in pressure too. Here's a really clear article about the valve operation - blog.cantonracingproducts.com/blog/importance-of-accusump-valve-selection-how-to-choose
@@DeanNewcombDrift ah I didnt realise the valve was one way into the unit at all times, that makses sense. Having the valve open all the time would still be better than nothing tthough as if you suddenly starve the pump of oil at high rpm round a corner the acumulator will have equal pressure to what the engine was making just before starve, say 65psi, and would discharge back into the engine until the pump builds pressure again. The rpm/pressure table is pretty nifty and I will definitely install mine with a similar control. I cant work out why people dont use these accumulators more!!
I agree with you, and also these solenoids can fail so its honestly safer more cost effective and more accurate to go manual and let the pressure control.
how much HP is this? Thanks!
430kw at the wheels in this video. Has a new turbo now and makes just under 500kw.
In HP, between 570-670HP at the wheels.
may i know the setup? Thank you!
Nitronixus 1.5JZ, E85, Link Fury ECU. In this video it had a Garrett GT3082r @ 19psi. New turbo is GTX3582r Gen 2 @ 19psi.
Rad, i also have a mxs strada with a G4+ how did you get the whole screen to turn red?
I think it’s one of the warning options. You can choose to either have a light flash or the whole dash to display the warning.
Newcomb? In Geelong? Haha great videos!
Sorry, I forgot to reply! I'm in Adelaide.
Best video! It is necessary to run a remote oil filter?
Bashshar Hussain Thanks! The main thing is that the accumulator is feeding directly to the motor. I think some filter blocks have AN fittings on them which would work.
Are you using a cable TB or DBW TB? thanks
Sorry. Forgot to respond. DBW. 370Z pedal and throttle body.
what gear box ratio and final drive are you using on this sweet setup?
Jason Kong Hey mate. It’s a TR6060 6 speed and 4.11 GTR diff.
@@DeanNewcombDrift thanks , thats a very high FD for such high HP car . does it build enough boost ?
@@jkpisces Yeah, but 1st gear is useless though. haha. If you check my recent Mallala video you can see I barely go past 50% throttle anyway.
@@DeanNewcombDrift any reason why u dont use lower FD like 3.3-3.5 instead ? to maximise the powerband on each gear?
No real reason. I used a 3.7 in the Soarer, that worked pretty well, but it starts to limit what gear you can use. I.e. 2nd will be maxed out, then 3rd will be really low in the rev range. I intend to get a taller diff and use a closer ratio dog box.
much better than the simple gps based speed display on gopro. sadly 2 stroke dirtbikes dont have data logging, haha.
Thanks for sharing your experience mate ! Can you please share the links of your setup ? ( ecu, dash, board.. )
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I use a Link Fury and AIM MXS Stada dash. You can find the whole range at garage7.com.au
Compared to Haltech would you recommend Link for an R32 GTR? I am about to go single turbo with a build of no more than 450 KW (600hp) at the flywheel. I am not sure if you have used Haltech before so you may compare one to the other. Any suggestions, input would be appreciated. Thumbs up on the vid.
Hey mate, sorry only just saw your comment. I haven't used Haltech before. The Link has worked amazingly out of the box, more and more top level drivers internationally are changing to Link because of how well it works. The Link Fury has everything all built into it; knock, wideband, data logging etc so there's nothing else you need to buy.
@@DeanNewcombDrift Thanks for the reply, few weeks back my son purchased a Link Fury for his Z32 and he cant say enough good things about it. Comprehensive, easy to use. Thanks again.
How did you find the shockworks compared to other brands? worth the extra cost?
I've only done the 1 event so far but I could feel that everything is much smoother (you might be able to see some of that in my wheel well footage). I'll need to do a practice day to really focus on setting them up. The best thing about Shockworks is the support, they've been valved specifically for my setup and I was sent some options of springs to really dial it in. They want to make sure I get the most out of them.
cheers Dean, i have an accumulator on my 1j with a Link and didn't even think of making a table like that to control it. Definitely have to suss that out .
Rolling Addiction Yeah, there’s definitely some cool stuff the Link can do with it. The table has to be set up specific to your car’s oil pressure too btw.
Awesome info mate. Thanks heaps for that
No worries! Hope there’s enough detail there to get you set up. Always double check everything with your tuner first too!
god damn that intro mate!!!!!!!
that in car camera setup is pretty slick. how have you got that setup? seems to move around to match where you are looking. your commentary in this vid was great. its nice to get a bit of an insight into the behind the scenes goings on
Thanks mate! It’s a 360 degree camera so it captures everything. It follows the direction the gyro detects but I can also make it move anywhere in the software afterwards.
G'day mate hahahaha
Man this is gold!!! "Pick ya nose". Loved this Dean, done well man
Haha. Thanks mate. First time I did the voice over I said “Gday this is Jake Jones” as you pulled up, but didn’t think anyone would get it.

so how did it go?
It didn’t have AMAZING grip, was easy to drive and had even tyre wear though. Might try another setting that gives it more toe in under load.
